BP Marine
Ship to Shore
Ship to shore delivery of fuel and lubricants presents one of the largest sources of risk to ship operators and supply contractors. Research has suggested that the exposure of people to risk during the ship-to-shore interface was too high, largely because of the absence of ‘common’ best practice i.e. different safety protocols for different stakeholders. As one of the world’s leading suppliers of fuels, lubricants and technical services to the global marine industry, BP Marine takes a strong stand on safety, encouraging a ‘zero incident mindset’ in all employees.
thePRfirm were asked to craft a strategy that would send a positive safety message about shared responsibility for zero incidents, focusing on multi stakeholder co-operation to tackle the risks associated with worldwide ship-to-shore delivery of fuel and lubricants. The message would be delivered to a range of stakeholders, which would take more than a media campaign to ‘unite’ the industry. Research to gauge the mood of the industry, understand existing processes and identify potential weaknesses was carried out to win support for a collaborative approach. thePRfirm contacted key stakeholder organisations and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) community as this was vital in any safety campaign.
To create a buzz, thePRfirm invited key stakeholders to The BP Marine Forum on Ship-to-Shore Safety in London. Marketing material was produced to support the event and used in a direct marketing campaign. The aim of the symposium was to promote dialogue and develop a consensus among participants on safety issues, and encourage the creation of new industry best practice. Representatives from 14 organisations attended, from energy, ports and shipping sectors, as well as classification, educational and training bodies.
